St Edwards
A group of students from St Edwards College in Liverpool are working with Unit 3 Design Studio, a Liverpool based design practice. The group are producing a unique and imaginative design for the Produce Exchange, a prominent historical disused building on Dale Street in the commercial district of Liverpool. Most recently used as a bank, it was originally a trading place, the building includes a large trading hall on the ground floor. Their creative ideas involve a fusion of functions and diverse clients to occupy the vast building and the practicality of redevelopment has been thoroughly examined through sketches, workshop models, montage and discussions with the architects. Students have taken part in workshops that have included a tour of the building by the building owners, meeting clients, design workshops, presentation skills sessions and model making.
Being in a prominent city centre location (adjacent to Mathew Street) has provided the students with fantastic opportunities for exploring functions and uses that promote the surrounding area and encourage both tourism and local residents use.

The group have got all of their floor plans done and their elevations! After making tonnes of progress during the last workshop, they are ready to make a model for their display, followed by an eye catching mood board.
Their vision is to being 2 businesses - FACT and LEAF together to provide a service for customers, they plan to inject a modern influence into older buildings to bring customers a new and unique experience. Exhibitions will draw customers in for LEAF and the attraction of tea and cake at LEAF will bring people in for exhibitions.
Having thoroughly researched the area - the buildings position in the center of the businesses district means that there is nothing else quite like it near by and by keeping the atmosphere unique and friendly, they could keep customers away from chains like Costa. Then venue itself is easily accessible, making deliveries easy, there is plenty of storage space and its location makes it central and easy to travel to. Being in the business district, it means that they are very close to their target audience - businesses people getting lunch. -

Fantastic workshop yesterday afternoon at the school looking at the refurbishment and restoration of historical and derelict buildings within the City.
After looking at a number of successful precedents (including The Bluecoat and Alma de Cuba), the students looked at how we could sensitively introduce 'new' elements onto the facade of our building (don't mention fish tanks again!). They also began investigating the branding and corporate identity that could be used to promote the building as an attraction and incorporated into the design.
Having two similar creative clients proposed for the site, we also considered how their merging of ideas and pilosophies may influence the design and layout of the building over the 5 floors in The Produce Exchange.
Overall a really productive afternoon with some 'proper snazzy ideas' and targets set for the next session!
